Welcome .......

"Great way to meet new people,

taste lovely, unusual wines

you wouldn't normally be able to find or afford"

Hey! It's our 30th Birthday!

On 19th May 1993, two BoA residents decided it would be a great idea to start a club, where people who enjoy wine could get together to sample, chat and learn from experts, who would simplify the mystique around wine.  The philosophy being, wine should not be elitist.

Those inspiring people were Teresa and Jonathan Hewat (writer, teacher and broadcaster)  who are both very sadly missed, but their legacy continues as BAWAS goes from strength to strength.

BAWAS 30th Birthday & Summer Party 2023

On 19th May 2023,  we reached our 30th year (see above)!

We celebrated this at our annual summer party on 24th June. in the beautiful gardens of one of our members. It was sweltering hot.

Thanks to Finn (Fat Fowl)  for providing an amazing 2 course buffet https://www.fatfowl.com/

and Christine Orton for producing our beautiful anniversary cake.

Come along to our next course

'How to Join'.

Enjoying a glass of wine with a meal or with friends is something many of us do.

But how often have you wondered what is the story behind the wine, how it was made, who produced it, what makes it special?

Are you tired of drinking the same old bottle from your local supermarket but don’t feel confident about trying something different?

Joining BAWAS can help you answer some of these questions.

Why join us?

WE MEET ON MONDAY EVENINGS

At BAWAS you will:

  • join an informal and unpretentious group

  • enjoy wine tastings in Spring and Autumn every year, at a venue in the centre of Bradford on Avon

  • learn about wines from well-known and lesser-known wine regions of the world

  • try a variety of wines at a reasonable cost

  • hear knowledgeable speakers from the wine trade

  • buy wine at discounted prices

  • be invited to other ad hoc events such as the summer party

  • meet others interested in wine

There is no need to have any previous experience.

Above all, we aim to make our tastings fun but informative.

BAWAS was formed over 30 years ago and you can find out more

What members say about BAWAS

BAWAS Member

I have tasted wines from all over the world and ones that I would never have come across if I had not been on BAWAS wine courses.

BAWAS Member

BAWAS is excellent value for money! Every night you get to test 8 different wines for next to nothing in cost.

I've learned that there is no such thing as a 'good' wine - the truth is that, different people like different things.

We asked our 14 new members last year for feedback.
Here is what they said:

Overall how would  you rate the course?

89% of respondents rated the course as 'excellent' or 'very good!'

Have you enjoyed the evenings?

  • Yes. They are well organised, the venue is good and the atmosphere is great. Overall the presentations have been interesting, the variety of wine regions have been great

  • Yes very much. I have a tendency to be fairly conservative when it comes to buying wine so the course has introduced me to wines I wouldn’t normally try. Plus, it’s been great to meet new people in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

  • Yes I did enjoy the course. Personally I like the back stories about the regions and the winemakers rather than the very technical details about production.

Would you recommend BAWAS to others?

  • Yes, friendly atmosphere, interesting wine findings, increase wine knowledge and appreciation.

  • Good way to meet new people with shared interest in wines.

  • It’s a fun way to learn a bit more about wine from a maker or merchant or just to have a social evening trying new wines and listening to other peoples knowledge and opinions.

  • Yes, particularly if you have just moved to the area and would like to get to know people

  • Yes. Enjoy trying wines you won’t find in Sainsbury’s and make new friends.
